Conrad goes to camp CAMP!

Conrad spent 5 nights away from home at Summer “camp CAMP” this month!  CAMP stands for Children Association for Maximum Potential, an organization with the mission to strengthen and inspire individuals with special needs.  Anyone that has followed Conrad’s journey knows that those words fit exactly with our key operating principles.

I must admit that I was skeptical at first.  I had heard about camp CAMP and thought that Conrad would not benefit and perhaps being away from home so long would actually hurt not help.  This is not the first time I have been completely wrong! Every reservation I put forth was immediately and confidently addressed.

When I arrived at camp CAMP I had 4 people listening to the details of his care regimen.  They asked questions and made me feel confident that he was in good hands. Ella, Conrad’s dedicated counselor was literally by his side the entire time.  She journaled all the activities horseback riding, swimming, music, canoeing….He even enjoyed the classic camp cuisine — s’mores.  And as you can see by the smile on his face, Conrad had a blast. Steve, a volunteer nurse slept in the room with him.  He even had a Physical Therapist who made sure he received his morning stretches.  Ella is going to send me more pictures so I will post as soon as I get them.

The talent of the volunteer medical professionals in and of itself is noteworthy.  I cannot do justice in describing the character of the volunteer counselors, but will try…  These young men and women have the unique ability to be both mindful of the campers’ special needs but creative in their interactions that the disabilities actually fade into the background.  It makes you feel good about our world that people like this exist.

Please join me in thanking CAMP and congratulating Conrad in this important milestone.
